Georgia's lari was reintroduced in 1995 as part of the country's monetary reconstruction following the collapse of the Soviet Union and a period of catastrophic hyperinflation during which the transitional coupon currency, the kuponi, became nearly worthless within two years of issue. The National Bank issued this denomination continuously across a twelve-year span, suggesting stable production demand rather than periodic restrikes.
