Georgia's first post-Soviet currency series, the lari, replaced the interim coupon currency (the kuponi) in 1995 after years of catastrophic hyperinflation had rendered the coupon essentially worthless — at its worst, exchange rates against the US dollar ran into the hundreds of thousands. The lari redenomination wiped six zeros off the coupon, a necessary reset after one of the more severe monetary collapses among the former Soviet republics.
Oberthur's Rennes facility handled the print run. The series carries only a watermark as its primary security feature — modest by contemporary standards, reflecting either budget constraints on the newly independent central bank or a deliberate decision to prioritize rapid deployment over security specification.
