Obverse description The national emblem of the Maldives occupies the central field, depicting two crossed national flags flanking a crescent and star device, surmounted by a palm tree, all above a scroll bearing an Arabic inscription. The Gregorian year 1960 appears to the left of the emblem and the Islamic Hijri year ١٣٧٩ to the right. The design is contained within a toothed border around the entire periphery. The composition is rendered in moderate relief with clean, precise die work characteristic of mid-twentieth century Commonwealth-influenced coinage.
