The "Gold Laari" was struck for the collector market rather than circulation — the laari as a denomination had long existed only in base metal for everyday use. The 1986 issue falls within a period when the Maldivian government, like many small island nations in the 1980s, pursued bullion and proof coin programs as a source of foreign exchange, effectively monetizing collector demand from abroad.
