1 Kyat

Myanmar's Security Printing Works at Wazi — a facility built specifically to reduce dependence on foreign printers following the 1988 coup and the international isolation that followed — produced this note entirely domestically. The 1 Kyat denomination had been in continuous use since the socialist-era issues of the 1960s and 70s, but the 1996 series reflected SLORC's push for self-sufficient currency production, however modest the results.

At this denomination, practical utility was negligible by the mid-1990s — chronic inflation had rendered single-kyat notes nearly worthless in daily commerce.
