Angola's Banco Nacional was founded in 1976, just months after independence from Portugal, stepping into a near-total institutional vacuum — the colonial Banco de Angola had been evacuated along with most of its staff and records. The 30th anniversary issue commemorates an institution that spent much of its first two decades operating during active civil war, managing a currency that experienced catastrophic inflation through the 1980s and 1990s before the kwanza was redenominated multiple times.

The bimetallic format was almost certainly a prestige choice for the collector market rather than any circulating intention.
