Obverse description Right-facing bust of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda occupying the majority of the field, rendered in high relief with fine detail on the cropped hair and suit collar. The effigy is engraved in a naturalistic portrait style attributed to Paul Vincze. The legend MALAWI curves along the lower periphery in bold incuse Latin lettering, partially underlapping the truncation of the portrait.

Reverse description A standing cockerel, the national symbol of Malawi, is depicted in bold relief at the centre of the field, facing left with its elaborate plumage and tail feathers finely rendered. The bird stands upon a low curved pedestal or ground line. The date 1992 appears to the right of the cockerel in the mid-field. The denomination legend ONE KWACHA curves along the lower portion of the coin, with ONE to the left and KWACHA to the right and bottom, in large bold Latin lettering.
