Additional information

KM#20 belongs to the second-generation Malawian coinage introduced after the country abandoned its peg to the British pound sterling and moved toward managed float arrangements in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The shift to nickel brass for the one-kwacha denomination reflected both rising metal costs and the practical demands of a currency circulating under significant inflationary pressure during that period.
