Issued as part of Turkey's "Animals in Danger" series, this piece belongs to a multi-year program by the Turkish State Mint aimed at drawing attention to species threatened within Anatolian and Thracian ecosystems. The Pygmy Cormorant (*Microcarbo pygmaeus*) breeds along Turkey's wetlands, particularly around the Kızılırmak Delta, where drainage and agricultural encroachment have steadily reduced viable habitat since the 1970s.
