Additional information

Alauddin Mansur Shah ruled Aceh during a period of intense commercial rivalry with the Portuguese at Malacca, and gold coinage functioned as much as a diplomatic instrument as a trade medium — Acehnese kupangs circulated across the pepper and spice routes of the Strait of Malacca alongside Indian, Ottoman, and Chinese currency. The .708 fineness is consistent with locally refined Sumatran alluvial gold, not imported bullion, which accounts for the slight variation in purity seen across surviving specimens of this type.
