Croatia's 1941 pattern coinage was produced under the Ustasha regime's newly proclaimed Independent State of Croatia, which came into existence in April of that year under Nazi and Italian sponsorship. Multiple pattern types were explored before production coinage was finalized — this aluminium example represents one of those rejected or preliminary designs, catalogued by Viscevic as S34. Aluminium was the practical metal of choice for small denominations in Axis-aligned states during the war, as strategic metals were largely commandeered for the German war machine.
