The Nezavisna Država Hrvatska — the Ustaše puppet state installed by the Axis powers in April 1941 — revived the kuna as its currency unit, a name last used in medieval Croatian coinage and deliberately chosen to signal historical legitimacy the regime otherwise lacked. This 1 Kuna note was printed domestically at the Hrvatska državna tiskara in Zagreb, one of the few wartime issues by a belligerent state where both design and engraving were handled by a single named artist. Ljubo Babić was a legitimate and respected figure in Croatian fine arts, which made his involvement in NDH currency production a biographical complication that outlasted the war.
