Estonia restored the kroon in June 1992 after fifty years of Soviet-imposed ruble circulation, pegging it to the Deutsche Mark at 8:1 — a rate chosen partly for psychological clarity and partly because the Bundesbank quietly supported the arrangement. The currency board mechanism adopted at reintroduction was unusually strict: every kroon in circulation required full hard-currency backing, leaving no room for the inflationary monetary policy that had destabilized other post-Soviet transitions. This coin entered circulation in one of the most abrupt currency switchovers in modern European history, completed in under a week.
