William, Duke of Brunswick, ruled under persistent political tension with Prussia, and his mint's gold output from this decade is thin enough that pattern issues like this one — catalogued across Friedberg, Schlumberger, and Divo — blur the line between presentation piece and monetary proposal that never advanced.
The Pn53 designation confirms pattern status. No regular circulation issue in this denomination and metal was produced for 1857.
