Det norske Spitsbergensyndikat issued these notes for use at its Svalbard mining operations, where the remote location made conventional currency impractical — company scrip became the de facto medium of exchange for workers who had nowhere else to spend it. The syndicate held coal mining interests on the archipelago before Norwegian sovereignty was formally confirmed under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty, meaning these notes circulated in a territory with genuinely ambiguous international status.

Emil Moestue in Oslo printed the series, a firm better known for commercial and government print work than for currency production. The watermark is the sole security feature — modest for scrip of this type, but sufficient given the captive and isolated user base.
