Sigmundsherberg, a large Austro-Hungarian prisoner-of-war camp in Lower Austria, issued its own internal currency during the First World War as a means of controlling commerce within the compound and preventing hard currency from circulating among prisoners. The Offiziersabteilung — the officers' section — maintained administrative separation from enlisted men's quarters, and its scrip was issued and redeemed independently, a detail that distinguishes this note from the general camp series.
Campbell 1452 places this among the better-documented Austrian PoW emissions, but surviving examples remain genuinely uncommon. Camp notes of this type were designed to be worthless outside the wire, and most were destroyed or discarded at repatriation.
