Danish prøve coins — official mint trials submitted for approval before a design enters production — occupy an odd bureaucratic space: struck in limited numbers, circulated only among ministry officials and the royal household, and almost never released to the public. The 1986 krone trial preceded a period of significant redesign consideration for Danish circulation coinage, though the standard krone series continued largely unchanged. Most prøve pieces from this era survive in near-pristine condition simply because they never left a cabinet drawer.
