Denmark's 1973 coinage reform was triggered by the country's entry into the European Economic Community that January, prompting a wholesale redesign of the circulating series to modernize the currency's appearance under the new reign. The krone had already shed its silver content years earlier, but this issue formalized the post-decimalization aesthetic that would carry through nearly two decades of circulation.
Margrethe II had acceded only in January 1972, making these among the earliest coins to bear her effigy in regular circulation.
