Marchtrenk, in Upper Austria, held Russian prisoners captured during the early Eastern Front campaigns of 1914–15. The camp scrip issued there — of which this 1 Krone note is part — was printed by Haas & Comp. in nearby Steyr, a practical choice that kept production local and under military oversight. Camp currencies of this type were introduced across the Austro-Hungarian system to prevent prisoners from accumulating reichsgeld that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with civilian populations.
Haas & Comp. were primarily a commercial stationery printer, which shows in the workmanship.
