Buchhandlung F. Steurer was a bookshop in Linz that issued this emergency small-change note during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the years immediately following the First World War. Municipal authorities, businesses, and even private traders across Austria were permitted — or simply tolerated — in producing their own Notgeld when official coinage became functionally unavailable. A bookshop issuing currency is less strange than it sounds; the printing infrastructure was close at hand, and the reputational stake of a local merchant was often considered sufficient guarantee of redemption.
The JPR0556a-1 designation places it within the Jaksc corpus of Austrian local issues, a collecting area where provenance documentation is frequently thin.
