Austrian municipal notgeld from the post-WWI period, this 1 Krone was issued by the commune of Kirchberg am Walde in Lower Austria — a small market town in the Waldviertel, northwest of Zwettl. F. Berger of Horn was a regional printer responsible for a significant volume of Lower Austrian notgeld, working from the same Waldviertel district as the issuing municipality.
Three signatories authenticate the note: the Bürgermeister Zwettler and two Gemeinderäte, Mayer and Herbst — the full civic quorum typical of Austrian communal issues legally required to authorize emergency currency.
