1 Krone Hart bei Amstetten; PoW Camp

Hart bei Amstetten, in Lower Austria, housed one of the many Austro-Hungarian prisoner-of-war camps that issued their own internal scrip during the First World War. These camp currencies were administrative necessities — they prevented prisoners from accumulating imperial coinage that could fund escape attempts or be smuggled out, while still allowing limited canteen transactions within the wire. The Offiziersabteilung designation is significant: this was the officers' section, which under the 1907 Hague Convention was entitled to separate quarters and pay, giving the scrip an economic function beyond mere token rationing.

Campbell 1386 is among the scarcer Austrian camp issues, with the Amstetten group poorly documented compared to the larger Austro-Hungarian installations.
