Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — usually shortened to SNSK — operated the Norwegian mining settlements on Svalbard as near-total company towns. Workers were paid in company scrip that could only be spent at company-run stores, a system that persisted well into the post-war decades and was quietly controversial given Norway's broader labor rights framework at the time. The 1957 date places this note within the period when SNSK was majority state-owned, following the Norwegian government's acquisition of controlling interest in 1945.
Svalbard scrip is underrepresented in major collections partly because much of it was redeemed, destroyed, or simply used up — the archipelago's isolation meant very little found its way to the mainland in circulated form.
