Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani issued scrip currency for use exclusively within Longyearbyen — a coal-mining settlement on Svalbard so remote that ordinary Norwegian currency was impractical to supply and recover in sufficient quantity. The company effectively ran a closed economy: workers were paid in this scrip and spent it at the company store, keeping money from leaking out of the settlement entirely.

The SN21r reference denotes a remainder — unissued stock, which survived in quantity precisely because it never entered circulation. Genuine circulated examples from the 1919–1926 period are considerably harder to find.
