Frederik III inherited a Denmark humiliated by the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, but this krone predates that disaster — struck in the first years of his reign when his authority was still constrained by an assertive nobility. The Estates had effectively reduced the monarchy to a figurehead before the war with Sweden forced a political realignment that would culminate in the absolute monarchy of 1660. These early issues were produced under that older constitutional order, one that would not survive the decade.
The "short motto" designation distinguishes this die pairing from contemporaneous issues carrying the extended legend — a detail that matters for attribution but is rarely noted in general references.
