Gustaf VI Adolf acceded in October 1950, and the Swedish Riksbank moved quickly to redesign the circulating coinage for the new reign. The 1951 nickel patterns for the 1 Krona were part of that exploratory process — the production coins ultimately adopted a different metallic composition, with the circulating issue struck in nickel-clad steel rather than solid nickel. These patterns therefore document a material path that was considered and rejected.
The three SMF references distinguish between die variants within the pattern series, suggesting multiple submissions or revisions were evaluated before the final specification was locked.
