Obverse description The Icelandic coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield supported by the four Landvættir (guardian spirits): Griðungur the bull at lower left, Gammur the eagle at upper left, Dreki the dragon at upper right, and Bergrisi the giant at lower right. The shield bears a silver cross on blue and red quarters, with a rocky crag in the base quarter. The composition is rendered in a bold, heraldic style with the supporters arranged symmetrically around the central escutcheon.

Additional information

Iceland's shift to nickel brass for this denomination in 1957 was a direct response to postwar metal economics — the earlier aluminium bronze version had become increasingly expensive to produce as global copper prices climbed through the early 1950s. The Central Bank made the change quietly, with no public announcement, and most Icelanders never noticed the difference in hand.

The series ran through 1975, when decimalization and persistent inflation made the single króna effectively worthless as a transactional unit.
