Maria Theresia inherited the Habsburg lands in 1740 under the Pragmatic Sanction, but her right to rule was immediately contested by Prussia, Bavaria, France, and Saxony — the War of Austrian Succession consumed the first eight years of her reign. Small billon coins like this kreuzer funded that war's enormous financial burden, and the Vienna Mint operated under sustained pressure throughout the 1740s to meet military expenditure demands.
The Her. reference range spanning ten die varieties across this type reflects consistent annual production rather than any single striking event. Later dates in the series, post-1748, coincide with the uneasy Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle and the reorganization of Habsburg fiscal policy under Haugwitz.
