| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned arms of Hesse-Darmstadt: a shield bearing the lion of Hesse passant on a horizontally lined field, surmounted by an elaborate grand ducal crown with arched bands and pearl ornamentation. The shield and crown occupy the majority of the field, rendered in fine relief. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular legend reading GR. HESSISCHE SCHEIDEMÜNZE (Grand Hessian small change) arranged around the periphery in upright Latin capitals. |
