Obverse description Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Hesse-Darmstadt, featuring the Hessian lion passant in the base quarter, surmounted by an elaborate electoral crown. The legend is divided on either side of the shield reading G. H. to the left and L. M. to the right, representing Grossherzoglich Hessisch Landgraf Münze. The coin exhibits a milled edge border and the engraving is executed in a restrained early 19th-century German style.
