1 Kreuzer - Joseph I

Joseph I inherited a Transylvania already exhausted by the Rákóczi uprising, which had begun in 1703 and would not collapse until 1711. The tiny silver kreuzer issues of 1709 were struck during the final, grinding phase of that conflict, when Habsburg monetary authority in the region was contested and intermittent. Surviving pieces are often found with uneven surfaces consistent with poor planchet preparation under difficult wartime conditions — not die weakness, but a documented characteristic of the Transylvanian subsidiary mints operating under supply strain.
