John Philip von Schönborn became Archbishop-Elector of Mainz in 1647, arriving just in time to help negotiate the Peace of Westphalia that ended the Thirty Years' War. His small silver issues of the early 1660s reflect the fragmented coinage landscape of the Holy Roman Empire in the post-war decade, when dozens of ecclesiastical mints were restruck to reassert territorial authority. The Kreuzer denomination was the workhorse of small commerce throughout the Rhineland.
Walther 313 is the standard reference for this type within the Mainz series.
