The upper quadrant displays the Imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire surmounted by a crown; the left quadrant bears the Austrian fess; the right quadrant contains the Styrian panther; and the lower quadrant shows a crowned device. The composition is rendered in bold relief typical of mid-fifteenth-century Austrian hammered coinage, with a beaded inner border partially visible at the periphery. |

Frederick III issued this kreuzer from Wiener Neustadt, which served as his preferred imperial residence for much of his reign — he effectively governed from there rather than Vienna, which remained under repeated threat and, in 1462, was actually besieged while he sheltered inside the city walls. The Wiener Neustadt mint was among several Austrian mints operating under his authority, though Frederick's chronic fiscal difficulties led to persistent debasement disputes with estates and moneyers throughout the 1450s.
