Baden issued this pattern in 1871 to mark Prussia's decisive victory over France and the proclamation of the German Empire at Versailles — events that effectively ended the independent political identity of states like Baden, even as their rulers nominally retained their thrones. Frederick I had been among the most enthusiastic German princes backing Bismarck's unification push, and commemorative strikings from Baden in this period reflect that alignment.
Restruck in gold at a weight far exceeding the base-metal circulation piece, this was never intended for commerce. Such presentation patterns were typically produced in tiny numbers for court distribution or official gifts.
