Issued to mark Prussia's crushing defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War, this Baden kreuzer was part of a wave of commemorative copper struck across the German states in 1871 — the same year Bismarck's unified German Empire was proclaimed at Versailles. Baden had sided with Prussia early and decisively, making Frederick I among the more enthusiastic of the southern German rulers backing the war effort. Within months of this coin's striking, the kreuzer itself was obsolete, replaced by the pfennig denominations of the new imperial currency system.
