Baden's copper kreuzer coinage of this period survived largely because the state resisted full monetary integration with the emerging Zollverein currency framework longer than most German states. Frederick I had assumed full ruling power in 1858 after years of regency, and these small copper pieces were among the last independent Baden issues before the North German Confederation's monetary standardization effectively ended distinct state coinage. The series was discontinued within a few years as the pfennig system displaced the kreuzer across southwestern Germany.
