Nassau's 1808 coinage emerged from a duchy in rapid political transformation. The Confederation of the Rhine, formed under Napoleon's pressure in 1806, had just reorganized Nassau's fragmented territories into a single unified duchy, merging the Usingen and Weilburg lines under Frederick August and Frederick William as co-rulers — an arrangement that lasted only until Frederick August's death in 1803 put Frederick William sole in charge. The coin's dual attribution to both rulers reflects that brief transitional moment in the catalog record rather than actual co-regency at the strike date.
