By the late 1870s, the kreuzer was already a dying denomination — Austria-Hungary's gradual shift toward the decimal krone system made these copper pieces functionally obsolete before the series even closed. The Budapest mint struck them largely out of obligation to the existing monetary framework rather than any genuine commercial demand, which partly explains the wide variation in die quality seen across the decade-long run.
