Francis Christoph von Hutten zu Stolzenberg governed the Bishopric of Speyer from 1743 until his death in 1770, a tenure marked by careful financial administration in a territory chronically squeezed between larger German powers. Small copper kreuzer issues like this one were fundamentally a local solution — the petty coinage of the Rhine ecclesiastical states rarely circulated far beyond their own markets and toll roads. The Bishopric's minting rights, technically a vestige of Imperial privilege, were already an anachronism by 1765, with secularization barely a generation away.
