| Reverse description | The reverse presents the denomination and date in four horizontal lines of text within an ornamental wreath of foliate and floral branches: numeral I above KREU, IZER, the date 1733, and the mintmaster's initials G·K at the base. Two small rosettes or stars flank the numeral I at the top of the inscription. The wreath is rendered in a delicate, curvilinear style typical of early eighteenth-century German minor coinage. The composition is entirely typographic, with no pictorial motif. |

Ernest Louis ruled Hesse-Darmstadt from 1678 until his death in 1739, presiding over a court that punched well above its financial weight — he was an enthusiastic patron of music and maintained one of the more expensive orchestras in the German states, a habit that kept the Darmstadt treasury under persistent strain. Small billon issues like this kreuzer were the workhorses of everyday commerce precisely because the landgraviate lacked the silver resources to sustain a robust groschen coinage.
