Additional information

Charles II Louis Frederick ruled Baden as Grand Duke from 1811 until his death in 1818, a reign spent navigating the turbulent aftermath of the Napoleonic reorganization of the German states. Baden had been elevated to a Grand Duchy under French pressure in 1806, and the small copper coinage of his final years reflects a territory still consolidating its monetary administration after decades of political upheaval. The Kreuzer series of 1814–1817 spans the Congress of Vienna period, when Baden's continued sovereignty was far from guaranteed.
