Charles Frederick ruled Württemberg for less than two years before his death in 1744, making his coinage among the shortest-lived of any duke in the territory's history. The duchy was under considerable fiscal strain during this period, caught between the ambitions of the larger German states and the costs of maintaining a court that consistently outspent its revenues.

The kreuzer denomination at this weight was already being debased across southern German states by the 1740s, a slow erosion that would accelerate sharply through the Seven Years' War.
