The 1842 Zürich Kreuzer was struck in the final years before Swiss monetary unification made cantonal coinage obsolete. The Federal Coinage Act of 1850 abolished the patchwork of cantonal currencies and introduced the Swiss franc as the sole legal tender, rendering issues like this one effectively dead within a decade of striking. Zürich's billon pieces from this period circulated heavily in small transactions — bread, tolls, minor market goods — which explains why worn survivors vastly outnumber problem-free examples.
