Nuremberg lost its status as a free imperial city in 1806 when Napoleon's reorganization of German territories transferred it to the Kingdom of Bavaria — making this kreuzer among the final issues struck under that centuries-old civic authority. The city had maintained its own coinage rights since the medieval period; they ended that same year.
