Salote Tupou III ruled Tonga from 1918 until her death in 1965, and her international profile rose sharply after her appearance at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 — she rode in an open carriage through the London rain, refusing to have the hood raised, and became one of the most talked-about figures at the entire ceremony. This koula was struck near the end of her reign, part of a limited gold coinage issued as Tonga began navigating its path toward full independence from British protection, achieved in 1970.
The .91666 fineness corresponds to the traditional 22-karat standard used across British-influenced minting practice.
