Henry the Younger ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel through one of the most theologically turbulent periods in the region's history — a committed Catholic holding a Protestant-surrounded territory during the early Reformation decades, a position that made his principality an ideological outlier in Lower Saxony. This small silver piece circulated during his first period of rule before the Schmalkaldic League forcibly expelled him in 1542, after which the coinage of his principality was briefly interrupted entirely.
