Goslar's civic coinage of this period reflects the city's jealously guarded minting rights, which it defended against encroachment from the Prince-Bishops of Hildesheim throughout the sixteenth century. The Körtling — a small-denomination north German silver piece — circulated primarily in local trade networks centered on the Harz mining economy, where Goslar's proximity to the Rammelsberg ore deposits made silver coinage both practical and politically pointed.
