Göttingen's Körtling coinage belonged to a regional denomination system developed by Lower Saxon towns attempting to stabilize small-change commerce without dependence on territorial princes. By 1491, Göttingen was operating under the terms of its membership in the Hanseatic League while simultaneously managing fraught relations with the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who periodically contested municipal minting rights throughout the fifteenth century.

The Levinson reference places this piece within a tightly catalogued sequence — I-264 is not a common citation, suggesting limited surviving examples reached major collections before the corpus was compiled.
