Nagyszőllős — today Vynohradiv in western Ukraine — was administratively part of Ugocsa County when this note was issued amid the chaotic collapse of authority following the First World War. Emergency paper of this kind, issued by local utilities and commercial firms rather than any banking institution, proliferated across the former Kingdom of Hungary in 1919 as coinage vanished from circulation entirely and central monetary authority effectively ceased to function.
A lighting company issuing currency is less strange than it sounds — any firm with a ledger, a rubber stamp, and local credibility could fill the void. The Adamo catalogue documents several distinct Nagyszőllős issues from this period, suggesting sustained local demand rather than a single desperation printing.
