Additional information

Khengarji III ruled Kutch under British paramountcy for over six decades — one of the longest reigns of any Indian prince — but his early coinage reflects a monetary system still operating on the traditional kori standard rather than conforming to British India's rupee framework. Kutch was among the handful of princely states permitted to maintain its own silver coinage into the late nineteenth century, a concession tied to longstanding treaty arrangements rather than any particular merit of the local currency.

The kori's silver fineness sat well below that of the British Indian rupee, which occasionally created friction at the borders of the state where merchants had to discount the coins accordingly.
